Retrofitting a Pop-Up Roof: Costs, Process and What the TÜV Expects

Retrofitting a pop-up roof in Germany usually costs between 6,000 and 12,000 euros including installation, depending on the roof system, the vehicle, the paint finish and the interior trim. In return you get two things no other accessory delivers: standing height at camp and a second, full-size sleeping area. That is what turns a van into a camper that works for four.

This article puts the prices in context, explains the process and answers the three questions that come up before every conversion: does the vehicle warranty survive, does it have to be registered, and can you do it yourself?

What a pop-up roof actually changes

A van without a pop-up roof forces compromises: you cook stooped, get dressed sitting down, and the sleeping berths compete with the living area. The roof solves both at once.

  • Standing height at camp: cook, change and move upright — without raising the vehicle height on the road.
  • A second double bed: the SCA roofs we fit open to a fully equipped 120 × 200 cm sleeping area. Together with the lower bed that makes four berths.
  • Ventilation: insect-screened windows create cross-ventilation — in summer, the difference between sleeping and lying awake.
  • Driving behaviour unchanged: closed, the vehicle stays compact, car-park friendly and aerodynamic.

What that looks like in daily use is shown by our models — for instance the New Cappadocia on the new VW Transporter or the Assos on the Ford Transit Custom.

What does the retrofit really cost?

The total price is made up of three blocks. Comparing only the roof price compares the wrong thing.

1. The roof system

Plain sleeping roofs start in the low four figures. Full pop-up roofs with lifting mechanism, bellows, insect-screened windows and a proper mattress base sit well above that. The price follows the raised height, the opening direction and the specification of the bellows.

2. The installation

Most of the workshop time goes not into bolting the roof on but into cutting and reinforcing the roof skin, sealing it, and painting the lid in the vehicle colour. Budget several days in the workshop.

3. The secondary items

  • Painting the lid in the vehicle colour rather than leaving it white.
  • Upgraded mattress, slatted base and cover.
  • LED lighting and a 12-volt outlet in the roof bed.
  • Electric rather than manual opening.
  • Relocating roof bars, a solar panel or an aerial that sit where the new lid needs to go.

Added up, most conversions land in the 6,000 to 12,000 euro range. A dependable figure only exists once the vehicle, wheelbase and specification are settled — which is exactly what our pop-up roof quote form is for.

Why installation belongs in a certified workshop

During installation the load-bearing roof skin is cut open and then reinforced. This is not an accessory you bolt on but an intervention in the body structure. That is why self-installation is not permissible — the work belongs with a certified specialist who can document the reinforcement, sealing and corrosion protection.

What goes wrong in practice when that step is skipped: the frame twists, the doors close less cleanly, corrosion starts at the cut edges, and the bellows draws water. The damage shows up after one or two seasons — and then permanently.

TÜV, registration and the vehicle warranty

The SCA roofs we fit are TÜV-tested products and come with the corresponding documentation. That is why provenance and paperwork matter more than price: without a report, the conversion turns into a registration problem.

Installation is carried out so that the original manufacturer warranty on the vehicle remains intact. On the roof itself we give a one-year Europe-wide warranty. If the conversion is meant to form part of a motorhome registration, start with our guide on registering a van as a motorhome — it sets out which documents the inspector wants to see.

Which vehicle, which roof

SCA has been building pop-up roofs since 1980 and covers virtually every common van platform. Demonte Caravan is SCA’s official representative in Türkiye and fits the roofs across its own model range; for the VW Transporter and the Ford Transit Custom they are available from stock.

Two decisions come before the order:

  • Opening direction: raising towards the front or the rear. This decides where the headroom in the bed sits and how the roof relates to the sliding door.
  • Manual or electric: the manual version is lighter, cheaper and needs less maintenance; the electric one is more convenient if the roof is moved several times a day.

On a short wheelbase there is one more check: whether roof bars, air conditioning or a solar module sit where the lid needs to go. That can be settled beforehand and only corrected expensively afterwards.

Tell us the vehicle, model year and wheelbase — we will come back with availability, a workshop slot and a fixed price.

Retrofit, or buy a finished camper?

Do the honest arithmetic: roof, seating system, furniture, water and electrics add up to a considerable sum — and every component brings its own appointment, its own invoice and its own paperwork. A planned conversion, by contrast, arrives as one system, with one point of contact and one handover. The breakdown is in our post on the VW Transporter camper conversion.

If you would rather see the roofs and interiors in person: we exhibit every year at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf — stand and dates are on our fairs page.

Frequently asked questions about pop-up roofs

What does a pop-up roof cost fitted?

In Germany complete retrofits including installation usually run between 6,000 and 12,000 euros. Plain sleeping roofs are cheaper; full pop-up roofs with a proper bed, insect-screened windows and a painted lid sit at the upper end.

Can I install a pop-up roof myself?

No. Installation involves opening and reinforcing the load-bearing roof skin. That is an intervention in the body structure and must be carried out by a qualified specialist workshop.

Does my vehicle warranty lapse?

Not with a professional installation. Our conversions are carried out so that the original manufacturer warranty on the vehicle remains intact.

How big is the bed in the roof?

The SCA roofs we fit open to a fully equipped 120 × 200 cm sleeping area. Combined with the 130 × 190 cm lower bed that gives four berths.

How long does the conversion take?

Allow several days in the workshop. The largest share goes not to fitting but to opening and reinforcing the roof, sealing it, and painting the lid in the vehicle colour.

Does a pop-up roof fit the short wheelbase too?

Yes. The only check needed is whether existing roof bars, air conditioning or a solar module sit in the way of the lid. We settle that before ordering, based on vehicle, model year and wheelbase.
